Harline Larkey, B.S., M. Ed, has trained dogs for nearly 40 years, beginning with a family Sheltie she took to “Show and Tell”
at age 12.
She and her father trained and trialed their Shelties, culminating with a High In Trial win.
After graduating from Kansas State University with undergraduate degrees in psychology and speech and a Master’s in Education/Counseling,
she did clinical social work at a private psychiatric clinic but found time to compete her Thoroughbred in dressage, assist with classes at the
Wichita Dog Training Center and train “Emmie” her first Great Dane, for obedience competition. At that time, giant breeds were generally
not considered competition prospects, but Emmie defeated 49 dogs to win her first time out and quickly finished her CD title with high placements.
Harline’s past employment has also included sales, marketing and management, but she has always returned professionally to animals. She worked
in small and mixed practices as a vet tech for 8 years, during which time she studied canine behavior and taught obedience classes. She has over
500 hours in equine bodywork and anatomy, still works on horses and teaches anatomy at Prairie Winds Equine Massage Therapy College in Colorado. |
Harline and husband, Nolan, moved to the Rocky Mountain West in 1985 and still share their lives with Great Danes, many of whom have been riding, hiking and camping companions. Harline continued to compete with various members of the Larkey “Dane Gang” in obedience, rally and the breed ring, as well as training in beginning agility.
She partnered with the late “Quinn” to work as a Delta Society therapy dog team. Currently, she volunteers as a trainer for the area's only no kill animal shelter, Black Dog Animal Rescue.
The Larkey's live rurally northwest of Cheyenne, Wyoming. In addition to the three Great Danes, they have two kitties, Brunwick and Splash, and two horses, pasture ornament Buck and Primer, a talented former rodeo pickup horse, now Harline’s dressage and trail partner.
